The Ringwood Festival Plate was held today in fine weather but still very breezy after the very strong winds of yesterday. The competition was played in a Pairs format instead of the usual Triples.
Nevertheless, the matches were enjoyed by all who took part and after a very nice lunch, the semifinals and final were played in the afternoon.
The 10 end final was an exciting, very close match with the victors scoring 9 shots to 6.
Pictured from left to right are the winners Helena Webber and John Stone then runners-up Mel Jones and Denis Carr. Well done to Helena, John, Mel and Denis.
Well done also and a big thank you to Doug Jones who organised and ran the event, like clockwork, despite the lack of the Air Horn.

Monday saw the last matches in this season's Harry Wright Competition. Congratulations to the winner Frank Billett, 67 points and runner-up Roy Tutt, 57 points, for their performances during the series.

Also on Monday Sharon Varndell won 21-29 against Sue Lewis-Parkes (Waterside) at Lymington in the semifinal of the NFWBA Championship Singles (Bryant Rose Bowl). Well done Sharon.

On Wednesday, Ringwood Bowling Club hosted the Day 2 matches of the NFWBA Triples Competition. Ringwood Ladies' played very well and in the semifinal were beaten 9-8, by Brockenhurst, with the very last wood of an extra end.

In the evening, Lee Croad, unfortunately, lost his Bowls England Mens Champion of Champions Hampshire Area Final match against Leo May of Headley. Played at Banister Park, Lee lost by 21 shots to 12.

On Thursday Sharon Varndell won 21-6 against Helen Maltby (Highcliffe) in the semifinal of the NFWBA Officers Cup. Sharon went on to win another semifinal on Friday. She defeated Maureen Huggins (Braeside) 21-20 in the NFWBA Acorn Singles.

As you may or may not know, Audrey Merrington is in Bournemouth Hospital. She is most likely to be there for a couple of more days in order for the doctors to sort out her medication. She would love to see a friendly face or two and so, if you would like to visit her, the visiting times are between 2pm and 8pm in Ward 23.
Today, the Men's 1st Team travelled to Atherley to play Cove in the semifinal of the Bowls Hampshire County Club Championship. The hard fought match, however, resulted in Cove going through to the Final. Ringwood won one rink, drew another and lost two with the overall score of 95-75 in favour of Cove. Our Club Captain Derick Faulkner said after the match, 'Despite the loss, it was a great achievement for Ringwood to reach the County Club Finals, the first time we have done so.'

On Saturday, Ringwood Bowling Club hosted its first session of youth bowling.
Coaches Jenny Blake, Barry Vaughan and Debbie Senior were there to welcome any young people wanting to try bowling. Five were expected but only one turned up. Fortunately, Barry brought his grandson, Charlie age 11, as our first youth bowler.
The two-hour session with a break for tea and biscuits was great fun and a complete success as he wants to come again and plans to bring a friend.
We ended the session competing against each other with obstacles, skittles and jacks at different lengths with the scores ending as Barry 27, grandson 22, Jenny 14 and Debbie 13. In my defence the skittles are more difficult than they look and score the most points!
We all look forward to the next session on Saturday 10th August with Jenny and Barry looking after things.
This is a trial and holidays need to be taken into account, but I think this could be good for the future of new bowlers for Ringwood.
Debbie

With the New Forest Bowling Association League season now complete, it's congratulations to both the Men's 1st Team who are Champions again and to the 'B' team for gaining promotion to Division 3. Sadly, the 'A' team came bottom of Division 2 and are therefore relegated to Division 3. So, next year, there will be two League matches between the Ringwood 'A' and 'B' teams.

Overall last week, only three League matches were actually played, Ringwood drew 1 and lost 2.

Click on the coloured Team Names below to see the latest results and League positions.

No! Bryan Tanner has not succumbed to Tyson's Fury.

He has in fact contracted shingles in the eye.            In his own words:-

'Hi Allan
Thought you might like to see what shingles in the eye looks like.
Hate letting the club down, but besides the pain and being contagious, I can't see.
Regards Bryan Tanner.'

I spoke with Bryan this morning and despite his pain and suffering he is in an upbeat mood and looking forward to getting better so that he can get back onto the green. He hopes to be back sometime next month, hopefully the early part.

We all wish you well Bryan and look forward to seeing you back on the green.

Get Well Soon Bryan

Unfortunately, on Friday, Ringwood Ladies lost their County Thornbury Trophy West Area Final match against Swanmore.

Today, we entertained Verwood Bowling Club to the second Friendly match of the season between the two clubs. Everybody enjoyed the afternoon's bowling in wonderful weather. This time, Verwood avenged for their earlier defeat by Ringwood. A short report from our Friendlies organiser Jenny Blake follows.

The scores on the doors were as follows: We won 2, we lost 2 and, unfortunately, the total shots were Verwood 58 - Ringwood 53.
Lovely afternoon, sun shone, good company and will be repeated twice again next Season.
Our last friendly is against fordingbridge AWAY on Wednesday 14 August at 2 pm - just a few more names needed on the board.
Jenny Blake

Well Done Jenny.

So, you thought that the Cricket World Cup finale was the best, most exciting, end to a sporting match, EVER.

Well, those pictured above together with the spectators on the night may disagree with you. A report from Barry Vaughan follows:-

'Shame you were not there last night - the suspense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a win against Boscombe Cliff.
Our rink had a good start and at one time we were 14-7 up but once they got the jack back and went for longer throws we were in trouble. On the last end none of us got tight to the jack but mine was 2 foot behind it which was the holding shot for our rink to draw 18-18 with the match score finishing on 74-74.
Before the match it had been decided that Rink 2 would play the deciding end in the event of a draw. Fortunately, Rink 2 had won their game by 10 shots - nevertheless when Derick went to bowl, as No. 3, we were 2 down and a measure. Derick then played probably the best 2 bowls of his life to come in on and behind the jack, to hold 2, so leaving them no choice but to fire - and miss!!!! What a finish - the crowd went delirious - well Anne and Sharon were very LOUD - but it was truly as good as England winning the cricket!!!!!!!'
The Hampshire County Club Finals will be played on Sunday 4th August. Venue TBA.

24 Hours earlier, the Men's 1st Team became New Forest League Champions again, defeating Fordingbridge at Home. Well done to Derick and all those who played on Tuesday nights. This century, only three clubs have become New Forest League Champions. Ringwood 13 times, Brockenhurst 4 times and Fordingbridge 3 times.

Also on Tuesday, Lee Croad travelled to Southampton Old Bowling Green to play Ken Dow in his latest National Champion of Champions match. He came away with a WIN, 16-21, to secure his place in the Hampshire / Isle of Wight Area Final. Well Done Lee.

We had a visitor on Tuesday morning. Nigel Hurl was spending a few days in Ringwood and he popped in to say hello and have a chat. He also watched a few ends of the matches that were taking place. Good to see you Nigel. We all wish you well and good luck in the, soon to be here, Footy Season.

Overall last week, of the 6 League matches played, Ringwood won 1, lost 4 and drew 1.

1st Poulner Adventure Scouts Bowls Evening

Click on the image to open the Picture Gallery

On Thursday evening, the 1st Poulner Adventure Scouts visited Ringwood Bowling Club for an evening of bowls. 17 enthusiastic, scouts aged between 14 and 18 turned up for a fun evening with plenty of helpers from our club.                                   They aimed at skittles, found their way through hurdles changing the bias along the way, tried target bowls and aimed at a jack with coloured discs marking the way. Many showed natural ability, but all had a great time.                                                       After refreshments of cheese, jam sandwiches and biscuits (there were no leftovers) they could choose were they wanted to bowl. All 6 rinks were occupied with more Ringwood bowlers joining in. We all received a huge scout BRAVO at the end and individual thanks from all the scouts, including handshakes.

Thank you to everyone that helped to make this a success but more importantly a great, fun evening.

Debbie.
